How to Write Smut: What makes you horny?
The first thing to think about before writing a smut scene is about YOU. What makes you horny? It doesn’t need to be something you would want to do in real life, not even something that turns you on for real, but something that makes you live the fantasy. That’s what people want. People don’t really want to be f*cked by a seven-foot-tall blue alien in real life. That would be super scary. However, people do want to escape reality and live the fantasy. That’s why you’re writing.
The best way to do that is by dreaming about your own fantasies. Get in the mood. Here I talk about how I can only write about fantasies that I like, or, at least that I don’t hate. Some people could criticize me and tell me how we, writers, need to write about anything. However, I personally really believe in liking what you do, especially for beginners. So, dream a little, remember what turns you on, take notes, and start to imagine your scene.
How to Write Smuts: Tiktok! Or wherever you prefer
Still on the topic of “research”, go for sources of inspiration that can “get you in the mood”. That could be literal p*rn, or a smutty book. What about Tiktok? There’s a reason that app is so popular – and it’s probably because of all the thirst traps there. Really hot people dancing and seducing everybody. I have to admit that I browse it before writing any smut. However, I’m only trying to illustrate the point here: no matter where, get your inspiration and, even, describe what you’re seeing/imagining. That’s not copying, as you’re going to write it with your own voice and ways.
How to Write Smut: Foreplay
Okay, you’re in the mood, you’re super inspired, you’ve seen a scene that you could describe on your book, but you just don’t know how to start.
I’ll tell you now: you’ll start with the foreplay.
- How did your characters get physically close? Where are they? Describe the place where they are, and the mood that this place brings (like the music that’s there, if there are people, the smells, etc).
- Take them to a bed. Or a sofa. Or over the counter. Or a dungeon. Wherever the act is going to happen. How will they get there? Will they walk? Will some characters carry the other in their arms?
- What’s going to happen before the action? Is it dirty talking? Maybe one character is bratting. Is it a massage? A shower? Maybe they’re into food play and the other is rubbing chocolate all over their bodies. Is it a handjob? Blowjob?
- Remember – action, reaction. One character will act, and the other will react. One touch, the other shivers. One lick, the other gasps.
- What’s going on in their heads? Are they anxious? Are they completely carried at the moment? Are they relaxed and happy?
- It’s what I always say: go step by step, action by action. Calm down, the characters are feeling a bunch of stuff, and you’re to describe everything, however, you should be calm like in any other scene. Writing smut is like writing a battle scene, a dance scene, whatever. You describe what’s going on, both physically, emotionally, and in the environment, one action after the other, and that’s it.
How to Write Smuts: During
Okay, they’re both turned on, they’re getting to it. Now, I personally plan the scene, having a general idea of what will happen. Like one would plan a class, or a party, or a show. What’s going to happen first, then in the middle, then in the end? I personally really like to write B.D.S..M scenes, so I start thinking about first a light spanking, then a caning, then they’ll be really turned on, so fingering, then a little bondage, vibrator, etc.
Plan your scene and then write it, step by step. Keep in mind some tips:
- Will they change places? Or will they stay in the same place where they started?
- Will they need any toys? If so, will they go get them? How will that be?
- What’s the spice level? Do they have to discuss boundaries? What about condoms?
- Do they have to keep quiet? Or will they scream and moan, and do whatever they want?
- What will be the general mood? Will they be angry at each other in enemies-to-lovers style, or will they be real nice and loving?
How to Write Smut: Aftercare
After all is done, don’t forget that your reader also went on that journey with you. The reader might be also tired after reading that scene. Your characters already c*mmed, it’s time for them to clean up, rest, and be loving. What will they do for aftercare? A bath? Nice words? Promises of forever love? Aftercare is important both to your characters and to your readers. They want to feel that the characters are loved and cared for, no matter how rough the section had been before.
Romance is about love, don’t forget that.

I hope this helped, and, if it did, write here in the comments, please. The most important part is just to take it easy, go slow, take a deep breath, and go.
