This is the one million dollar question, literally!

I’ve seen countless times people giving up on blogging because they weren’t making any money with it.

They became bitter, sad.

The same thing for us authors: when we don’t treat this as a business, this is our fate. Spendind A LOT of money on something (a book) and never getting any back.

This is a nightmare tale, isn’t it?

Well, the good news is that: THERE IS a way of making money blogging. Make money as an author!

There IS a right way to do it.

However, there are all sort of information across the web and you just get totally lost about what to do.

How do bloggers make money after all?

I’m here to answer all your crippling doubt in a simply and organized way!

Only because you’re an AUTHOR and your GOAL is to SELL your books, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get some extra bucks with your blog. This is definitely part of my strategy of going full-time as an author: counting on the blogging part as well! Make money as an author and also as a blogger.

How do Bloggers Make Money?

I had no idea how that was before I became a blogger myself.

Bloggers make money with a simple formula:

BLOGGING = TRAFFIC + MONETIZATION METHODS

If you keep it this simple, I guarantee you that it won’t look as daunting as before.

You NEED traffic, you need people coming to your blog. Otherwise, nobody will find you nor will even KNOW that you’re selling stuff.

You also need ways of making money from that traffic. Know that only 1% or less that people that visit your blog will buy something. There’s a way to increase it, I’ll mention in the end, however, that is that: a lot of traffic and a lot of monetization methods, so people can buy your stuff.

  • How to get traffic?

This is something for THIS article here.

You can also get this marketing guide for you.

Briefly: Social media traffic, organic traffic (from Google search), referral trafic (from platforms like Quora);

I get traffic mostly from Pinterest and Twitter. Especially Pinterest. I’m also trying hard to get good at SEO, so I can rank on Google and get traffic from there. But it takes time.

I use: Facebook page, Facebook groups. I’ve used ads there, but I don’t intend to do it anymore. Instragram, also used ads, don’t want to do it anymore. Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr, Medium, Quora. I’ve tried Reddit, but it’s just not my cup of tea. I also started on Youtube. If you want, you can see my channel here!

Plus trying to rank on Google with SEO and Keywords.

However, this is all history for this blog post where I teach you exactly how to get traffic.

Remember, it takes TIME to get traffic. It doesn’t make sense to have A LOT of monetization methods getting 1 view per day. It also doesn’t make sense to have 10.000 people coming and 0 monetization methods. It’s a lot of effort, continuously, but it’s also very cool to see your visit numbers increasing.

What are the monetization methods?

Let’s start now on how do bloggers make money. There are some methods:

  • Ads
  • Affiliate links
  • Sponsored posts and videos
  • Services
  • Your own products

Ads

Ads is the proof that if you have traffic, you’ll make money, because that’s it: you put your ads on your website and you’ll get money when your visitors click on them. They don’t need to buy anything from you or from the ad, if they click, the ad provider pays you, if the ad is CPC (cost-per-click). They will also pay you in a CPM way, which is (cost-per-thousand impressions). It depends on the provider.

However, you need A LOT of traffic to make a living with ads. The good news is: if you suck at monetization, you DON’T want to try to sell things, you just want to sit back and let your blog run on autopilot, or only focus on the traffic part, you’ll make money.

To get ads, you have to sign up for some ad provider.

There are some like:

  • AdSense (Google)
  • MediaVine
  • AdPushup
  • Media.net
  • Adblade

A LOT of them, basically.

However, many require that you already have some traffic to be accepted on the program. The only one that doesn’t require is is Google AdSense. But it also pays the lowest amount.

I don’t use ads still because I want to increase my traffic first. The amount I was making with AdSense would give me 100$ in 5 years! Also, I don’t know what happened but I highly suspect that it broke my theme one day. Besides the fact that it makes your website look very spammy. I almost cried the first day I got ads on. I was making like 15 cents per day.

So, you DO need traffic first.

When I get enough traffic, I plan on researching the best ad providers and applying so I can make more than with AdSense.

Affiliate Links

This is when you believe so much in a product that you want to offer it to your audience.

For example, I do this with ProWritingAid, Neil Gaiman’s Masterclass, the Pinterest course. These are some products that literally changed my business game. I used ProWritingAid to edit my novel and without it, I wouldn’t probably have a book. Neil Gaiman gave me so many insights and improved so much how I write that I wish everyone would listen to me and give it a go! Pinterest Traffic Avalanche course is what make me have my first visitors and, without it, I’d probably have given up blogging, because it is SO HARD to get traffic. The course made it easy for me.

These are some examples of products that I really believe in and I want to tell all my audience about them.

If they buy it from my link, I get a commission.

  • How to become an affiliate partner:

For you to do that, you have to find a product that you want to sell and search to see if they offer the possibility of you becoming an affiliate.

Search something like this on Google: product + affiliate program.

Then, you apply to see if they accept your website as an affiliate partner.

YOU WILL NEED your website ready. They won’t accept you if you haven’t started yet.

When they do, they will give you a special link of your own.

When people go to their website through your link and buy their product, they know that you were the one who sold it to them. So, you get the commission.

Depending on the program, it has a “cookie time”, which means that if the person don’t buy right away, but decide to buy later or buy something else but the person has come through your link, you’ll still get the commission. However, this depends on the program.

I almost cried when I made my first affiliate sale. It’s the proof that this blogging thing works:

(yes, 45$ for ONE sale through my blog, I didn’t talk to the person that bought, nothing)

Some things to keep in mind:

  1. You need a website, an Youtube channel, or something like this to get approved in most cases;
  2. You need to BELIEVE in the product. You can’t sell crap. This is will hurt you;
  3. You have to put a disclaimer every time. This is THE FEDERAL LAW. If you don’t, you can end up being cut from the program. You have to let people know that you’ll get something by selling that product.

There are also some “networks” where you apply for the network and then you can sell products from them.

Some are:

  • Amazon Associate Program;
  • ClickBank;
  • ShareASale;
  • Rakuten;
  • JVZoo;

And many others. I use Amazon Associate and ShareASale. It is basically the same as I said above, but they have a lot of minor products that you can link trhough your posts. I do it with Amazon by linking shirts, mugs, notebooks, etc. The same conditions apply.

Some commissions are GREAT, like, 50% of the price of the product. You can earn REAL MONEY with this. Not some cents.

However, it is much harder to sell, especially for cold traffic. It’s not like ads, that you’ll get regardless. People have to BUY IT from YOUR link. If they decide to close and go directly from Google to the website, for example, you lost the sale.

Sponsored Posts and Videos

If you’ve ever watched Youtube, then you must have seen that a lot of them do videos advertising a product, a brand, a lot of things. They say something like: this brand gave me this product and I LOVE IT!

This is a sponsored video. A brand got in touch with them, through email or with their manager (if they are big) and offered them money, products, things like that, so they could create a video or post for the brand. I’m giving the Youtube example because it’s more well-known and spread, however, brands do that for bloggers too.

However:

  1. I’ve never done it;
  2. The company usually comes to you, not the opposite. You can’t go searching for them. Sometimes this will work, but I think most of the times you have to wait to get it;
  3. You have to have a lot of traffic and a real name.

I would love to do it. Someone paying me right away to write a post for them. This would be amazing. But, as I said, it takes TIME for people to look for you.

Get a lot of traffic and it might happen as well.

You’re seeing that traffic is KEY, right?

Services

These are the services you want to offer.

Maybe you want to ghostwrite, translate, edit, create covers, I don’t know. Anything you want to offer as a service.

Make it clear on your website that you’re offering this.

You can even create a sales page or something like this, with your prices and the appealing reasons why people should choose you.

I offer translation services and I would LOVE to start offering cover design services.

The downsides are that it takes TIME from you, it’s not passive at all, so this is not my main strategy.

However, this do give you REAL BUCKS as well.

Think about which kind of service you want to offer and start offering it.

Your Own Products:

This is a bit more advanced because you have to CREATE a product.

However, a book IS a product, so this is core to our strategy.

The great part is that you get EVERYTHING when you sell it. It’s like selling an affiliate product, but having all the control.

However, you do have to have traffic and a sales strategy.

Some other products besides books you can create:

  • Printables (planners, sheets);
  • Courses;
  • Your own merchandise;

You can create your own sales page. This is my book’s sales page.

Email Marketing

Email Marketing is the KEY to selling all those things I told you about.

Why?

My friend that works with (traditional) marketing told me how email marketing never works for bigger companies, that nobody likes receiving emails, etc, etc.

That is true.

However, in our blogging context, this is how we succeed.

Somebody comes to your blog, they like your content so much that they enter your email willingly. They GIVE YOU their EMAIL willingly, knowing that you’ll send them emails.

Nobody likes receiving emails, however, this person liked your blog so much that they WANT to receive it from you. (If they don’t, they just unsubscribe, and that’s okay too).

Then, you keep emailing them, giving them things, following an email strategy.

And THEN you use what we call “email funnel”, which is a way of offering the products in an organized manner that they will end up buying.

It’s HARD to sell for “cold traffic”, which is that one-time visitor that clicks on your website and leaves.

They don’t know you. They won’t buy from a random blog.

However, with email, you create a RELATIONSHIP with your readers, you make them keep coming back.

That’s it! However, you might be asking yourself:

  • What strategies can I use?
  • How to find affiliate products that actually convert?
  • What is a proven path to making money online?
  • How can I understand an email funnel better? Where can I get an email funnel template that WORKS?

Just like with Pinterest Traffic Avalanche, I have a course to present to you.

Yes, I’m an affiliate to it, because it was ESSENTIAL for me as well.

It’s Make Money Blogging for Beginners.

The objective of this course it to give you a FORMULA, a WAY to make your first 1000$ quickest as possible.

It tells you a step by step that I use EVERYDAY.

It also gets your email marketing to other level. This was the best thing for me. They explained EXACTLY the email funnel process and they GIVE YOU their template.

Definitely, check it out HERE!

(Use my link, please, you know why after reading this whole post!)

It has EVERYTHING I TOLD YOU HERE AND MORE! Like, much more. Strategies, templates, things that will take your blogging to the next level, honestly.

I am advertising them because I would NEVER BE HERE if it wasn’t for them.
